On-site generation cost

$0.05 to $0.15 per CCF, set by five inputs

CCF is hundred cubic feet, the standard unit for nitrogen consumption. Calculating per-CCF cost is mostly an electricity calculation: how much power your compressor draws, how efficiently it converts that power into compressed air, and how efficiently the PSA generator converts that compressed air into nitrogen at your target purity.

Power cost ($/kWh)

Your local industrial electricity rate. The single biggest driver of per-CCF cost. A site at $0.06/kWh runs nitrogen for roughly half the cost of a site at $0.18/kWh on otherwise identical equipment.

Required purity

Higher purity rejects more air per cubic foot of nitrogen, so the compressor works harder per CCF delivered. Going from 99.5% to 99.99% can roughly double the air-to-nitrogen ratio and the per-CCF cost.

Generator efficiency

Air-to-nitrogen ratio (cubic feet of compressed air consumed per cubic foot of nitrogen produced). Sealed-bed PSA designs hold this ratio for the life of the system. Flanged-bed designs degrade as sieve dusts and topping-off becomes necessary.

Compressor efficiency

CFM of compressed air delivered per horsepower drawn. Newer rotary screw and variable-speed-drive compressors are typically 15 to 30 percent more efficient than older units, which can move per-CCF cost meaningfully across a full year.

Output pressure and booster requirement

Up to about 100 PSI native, output pressure adds modestly to per-CCF cost. Above that, a high-pressure booster compressor stage is required, which adds its own kWh draw. Fiber laser cutting at 300 to 600 PSI and cylinder filling at 2,500 to 4,500 PSI both trigger this. Boosters can add $0.02 to $0.05 to the per-CCF number depending on the target pressure and how often the booster runs.

Yes, but they are modest compared to delivered-gas spend. Annual maintenance covers filter changes, valve service, and compressor service per the compressor manufacturer's schedule.
