Flow rate and purity are the main factors that determine the price of a nitrogen generator. That means you can get a small generator the produces low flow and, say, 99% purity for around the $5,000 price. If you are doing any production work or packaging, expect to pay around $25,000. It is important to note that the system you purchase will pay itself off in 12 to 14 months in most cases. That is the typical ROI for a nitrogen generator, regardless of purity or flowrate.

The average payback for a nitrogen generator is 12 to 14 months. In some parts of the world, it is much less, and in some rare cases, it is a little longer. The two main factors that determine the ROI are the cost to generate the nitrogen on-site and the price the client was paying before switching to on-site generation.

How much does it cost to generate nitrogen on-site?

The average cost to generate nitrogen on-site is anywhere from $0.05 to $0.15 per CCF (Hundred Cubic Feet).  To calculate how much it will cost to generate nitrogen on-site, you will need the following numbers.

1. The cost of power you are charged $kWh.
2. The purity of nitrogen you generate.
3. The efficiency of the nitrogen generator. (How much air per cubic feet of nitrogen generated.)
4. The efficiency of the feed air compressor supplying the air to the system. (How much air per horsepower the unit produces.)
5. Output pressure is another factor that is considered. Will the system require a high-pressure booster? That would add another cost per kWh based on the booster horsepower.
